The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that total nonfarm payroll employment declined by 23,000 in July, significantly missing the consensus expectation of an 80,000 increase. Combined with downward revisions of 66,000 for May and 37,000 for June, the labor market picture looks notably softer than previously assessed.
